Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Kallakurichi, Puducherry and Cuddalore districts of Tamil Nadu.
Cyclone Phangal is likely to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram this afternoon, followed by heavy rains in Tamil Nadu’s north and Delta districts and Puducherry.

A red alert has been issued across Tamil Nadu: in addition to Puducherry, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi and Cuddalore districts.
An orange alert is in place in Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal districts.
A red alert has been issued across Tamil Nadu: in addition to Puducherry, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi and Cuddalore districts.
Boats, generators, motor pumps, tree cutting equipment and other necessary equipment have been kept ready in these districts. NDRF and state disaster response teams have been deployed in these districts.
Warning of rough seas and strong winds, authorities have advised fishermen not to venture into the sea and move their boats and other equipment to higher grounds to prevent damage.
