World number-1 tennis player jannik Sinner has accepted a 3-month ban. WADA issued a statement on Saturday saying – ‘Sinner has accepted his mistake. Therefore, he has been banned for 3 months.’
The 23-year-old Sinner failed both World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) tests but was not banned by the International Tennis Federation. In such a situation, WADA filed an appeal against Sinner at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which was scheduled to be heard in April 2025.
Before the hearing, WADA and Sinner had reached an agreement for a 3-month ban. The ban will come into effect from February 9, which will last until May 4, 2025. The Italian star will be seen playing in the French Open, which starts on May 25.
The case had been pending for a year and the process was so long that a decision was only made at the end of the year. I have always accepted that I am responsible for my team and I believe that WADA’s strict rules are necessary for the safety of the game. That is why I accepted WADA’s offer of a three-month suspension to resolve the matter.
The case dates back to 2024. Sinner failed a WADA doping test during a tournament, but the International Tennis Integrity Agency did not ban Sinner. WADA appealed to CAS against this.
Traces of the banned anabolic steroid clostebol were found in Sinner’s body in March last year. jannik Sinner later said, ‘These elements entered his body while receiving a massage from a trainer because he used the substance after getting a cut on his finger.’
Young Italian star jannik Sinner won the Australian Open title on January 26. He defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena. He became the champion for the second consecutive time in the first Grand Slam of the year.
