Oscar 2025: 5 Indian films shortlisted: Box office flop ‘Kanguwa’ included; ‘Lappata Ladies’ out of race

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the list of shortlisted films for Oscar 2025. This list of 232 shortlisted films includes 5 Indian films. Out of 232, 207 films have been shortlisted for the Best Film category. Some of the shortlisted films from India include films that flopped at the box office.

Nomination of films based on voting.

Voting will be held on all 232 shortlisted films, after which they will receive the final nomination at Oscar 2025. Voting will begin on January 8 and will continue till January 12. After this, the final list of nominated films will be announced by the Academy of Motion Picture on January 17.

‘Missing Ladies’ out of Oscar 2025 race.

The film Lapata Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, was also sent for the Oscars, however, the film was left out of the final shortlisted films.

Kangua flopped at the box office, but reached the Oscars

Made with a huge budget of Rs 350 crore, Kangana has been shortlisted for the Oscar 2025. The film could earn only Rs 100 crore at the box office. The film starred Suriya, Disha Patani, Bobby Deol in important roles. After its theatrical release, the film was streamed on Amazon Prime.

Randeep Hooda’s independent hero Savarkar is also in the race for Oscars

Randeep Hooda starrer film Swatantra Veer Savarkar, released on 22 March 2024, has also been shortlisted for Oscar 2025. This film, based on the life of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, was mired in controversies for many reasons.

Missed the Golden Globe, but ‘All We Imagine as Light’ in the Oscar race

Recently, the film ‘All We Imagine as Light’ directed by Payal Kapadia was nominated in the Best Film (Non-English) category at the Golden Globes. However, the film failed to win the award. Now the film has been shortlisted for the Oscar 2025. Earlier, the film has won an award at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Oscar Awards ceremony will be held in March.

The 97th Oscar Awards will be held on March 2. Like the last few years, this year too the ceremony will be held in Los Angeles. Last year, Cillian Murphy’s film Oppenheimer won 7 awards including the Best Film award. However, no Indian film was eligible for Oscar 2024.
