Attacker of Japanese PM sentenced to 10 years: Smoke bomb was thrown at former PM Kishida in a rally 2 years ago; knife was found in the bag

The man convicted of attacking former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Japanese PM has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. The sentence was announced by the Wakayama District Court on Wednesday. The attacker’s name is Ryuji Kimura (25), he has been convicted of 5 charges.

He threw a smoke bomb at Kishida during an election rally in Wakayama city on 15 April 2023. Japanese PM survived the attack, but 2 others were injured. Kimura was arrested on the spot by the police. A knife was also recovered from his bag.

During the trial in early February, Kimura denied the charge of attempted murder. He claimed he did not intend to kill Kishida.

According to the Japan Times, Japanese PM had come to give a speech at an election rally in Wakayama city. The blast took place at 11:30 am on April 15, local time. After this, at around 1 pm, Prime Minister Kishida completed his speech in Wakayama city. He said – We are in the midst of the election campaign. We should continue it.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot dead at a rally on 8 July 2022. Abe was giving a speech during the election campaign in the city of Nara. During that time, the 42-year-old attacker fired from behind.

He was attacked with a handmade gun that looked like a camera. This was revealed by the photo that came after the firing. The attacker had designed the gun in such a way that it looked like a camera. For this, he had wrapped black polythene on the gun. The attacker came close to Abe on the pretext of taking a photo. Then he fired two bullets.
