The man convicted of attacking former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Japanese PM has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. The sentence was announced by the Wakayama District Court on Wednesday. The attacker’s name is Ryuji Kimura (25), he has been convicted of 5 charges.
He threw a smoke bomb at Kishida during an election rally in Wakayama city on 15 April 2023. Japanese PM survived the attack, but 2 others were injured. Kimura was arrested on the spot by the police. A knife was also recovered from his bag.
During the trial in early February, Kimura denied the charge of attempted murder. He claimed he did not intend to kill Kishida.
According to the Japan Times, Japanese PM had come to give a speech at an election rally in Wakayama city. The blast took place at 11:30 am on April 15, local time. After this, at around 1 pm, Prime Minister Kishida completed his speech in Wakayama city. He said – We are in the midst of the election campaign. We should continue it.
